Test beta ratio comes from the Multi-pass Method for evaluating performance of a fine filter element (ISO 16889:1999).
Before filtration we count the number of particles in the upstream,suppose the number is (n)upstream.
After filtration we count the number of particles in the downstream,suppose the number is (n)downstream.
Beta ratio=(n)upstream/(n)downstream
Example: A hydraulic filter element
Filtration accuracy:3 Micron
Upstream:1,000,000
Downstream:2000
Beta ratio=1,000,000(upstream)/2,000 (downstream)=β500
Beta ratios can also be expressed as an efficiency percentage – efficiency % = (Beta minus 1) / Beta * 100. This Beta2000 element is 99.8% effective.
